June 9, 1925 - June 19, 2013

Verna Lea Reed Franklin, aged 88, passed away at home in Poteet on June 19, 2013, after a long battle with cancer.  Mrs. Franklin was born in Junction, Texas, on June 9, 1925, to Charles R. and Lois Oliver Reed.  She moved to Poteet at age six months with her parents, where her father was associated with the railroad.  She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Lea Franklin, a brother, Ralph Reed, both of Poteet and many relatives, friends, and her caretaker, Gloria Fernandez.  She is preceded in death by her husband, John W. Franklin, her parents, a sister, Bonnie “Twinkles” Iandola, and brothers, Daylon and Bill.   As a descendent of the Cloud family of the American Revolution and the siege of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution, Mrs. Franklin was a member of both DAR and DRT.

After her father’s sudden death when she was a teenager and eldest child, Mrs. Franklin had to assist her mother (a teacher) in making ends meet for the family.  She took on the responsibility of filling the railroad steam engines with water from their artesian well.  When she graduated from Poteet High School, she boarded one of the trains she serviced for a trip to Texas Women’s University in Denton.  Upon receiving her degree in Home Economics from TWU, she began teaching in Shiner, Texas.  She also taught in Pleasanton, Poteet, Harlandale special education cluster, and Somerset, with most of her 39 year career in Poteet.  Mrs. Franklin taught many young women the life skills they needed to care for their future families.  She married longtime friend, John W. Franklin, in 1948.

Mrs. Franklin was very active in her community.  She was a lifelong member of the Poteet United Methodist Church where she participated in the UMW.  As a Grange member she took on the responsibility for creating the Strawberry Festival float each year which earned awards over and over.  She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Alpha Delta Pi, Atascosa-McMullen Retired Teachers Association, and the TSTA/NEA Retired Teachers.
