Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Adelina Fernandez Ortiz, who died on June 24, 2026, at the age of 86, surrounded by her children. Adelina was born on December 19, 1939, in Poteet, Texas, to Alfonso and Maria Fernandez. On November 25, 1962, she married the love of her life, Louis Ortiz, in Jourdanton, Texas.

Adelina was a lifelong resident of Poteet, Texas. In her younger years, she traveled with her family to Minnesota, Ohio, and Michigan for work. She later drove a truck delivering tomatoes to the Heines Factory, where she also worked the night shift. She worked alongside the Amish at Schmucker's Farms in New Haven, Indiana, and later served as a laundry technician at Mercy Hospital. Through it all, she was a devoted housewife and wonderful mother. In her later years, Adelina spent 30 years as a private caregiver for several families across the tri-city area, including Pleasanton, Tilden, Fowlerton, Poteet, and Floresville, before retiring at age 76.

In Adelina's eyes, everyone was beautiful, pretty, chulo, or Chula. She loved giving hugs and kisses. Her favorite pastime was caring for her flowers, especially her roses—planting, pulling weeds, and watering the yard. At times, she even watered the street when she forgot to turn off the hose. She enjoyed visiting friends, traveling, feeding cows, hunting, cooking, singing, dancing, and shopping for anything on sale. Her home was always spotless, with beds made and dishes and laundry washed and put away. No one who visited ever left hungry. Adelina never met a stranger; wherever she went, she always seemed to run into someone she knew. She had a heart of gold, endless patience, and a deep passion for caring for others. Everyone in her care was truly blessed. She loved to go on Sunday drives and see the countryside. Most of all she loved her family with all her heart.

Our mom was Extraordinary as a Sunrise and as Beautiful as a Sunset.

Adelina is survived by her children, Linda Ortiz (and Rick Harrill), Selma Ortiz (and Jeremy Groner), and Louis Ortiz Jr. (together with Audelia). She was a proud grandma to James Ortiz, Kathryn Harlan (and her husband Russ), Cheyenne Groner (and Brandon Davis), Avah Ortiz-Harrill, Tristan Groner, and a great-grandma to Pierce Charles Harlan, Curt Russell Harlan III, Scott Louis Davis and one on the way Adelina Marie Davis.

She is also remembered fondly by her siblings, Roy Fernandez, Jesse Fernandez, Joe Fernandez, Rudy Fernandez and Gloria Castaneda. Adelina was preceded in death by her husband Louis Ortiz parents, Alfonso and Maria Fernandez, as well as her brothers, Ben, Willie, Anselmo, Alfonso, Chemo and Alex.  Serving as Pallbearers: Roy Esquivel, Ray Ortiz, Tristan Groner, James Ortiz, Adam Perez and Rudy Fernandez.

Adelina touched the lives of many, and her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her. Please join us in honoring her memory and the legacy she leaves behind.
