ALVIE ELAINE HOWARD SMITH

Alvie Elaine Howard Smith, a lifelong resident and dedicated servant of Christine, Texas, passed away on January 8, 2026, in Jourdanton at the age of 82. Born at home in Christine on September 11, 1943, Alvie's life was defined by her deep roots in her community and her unwavering devotion to her family.

Alvie was the loving wife of David M. Smith Sr. for 57 years, and she served as a devoted caretaker for him until his passing in 2018. Together, they were cornerstones of their community, serving as active volunteers for the Christine Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Alvie's commitment to her town was further shown through her years of service as both City Secretary and Mayor. At home, she and David were always busy with a project; Alvie took pride in being his "gofer," ensuring every task was completed, even through the occasional chaos.

A woman of unique passions, Alvie found her therapy and relaxation in yard work. She was often seen mowing not only her daughters' lawns but also the cemetery, the gymnasium, and the fire department property. This love for the outdoors was so great that she even chose to mow on her birthday every year.

As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Alvie was a constant source of support. She cheered her children—Elaine, David Jr., and Beverly—through school, 4H, and church activities. When her grandchildren arrived, she embraced her role as a babysitter and self-described "house elf" for her daughters, always ready to cheer at sporting events. Her family will forever cherish the memory of her warm hugs and the scent of her perfume that would linger for hours after a visit.

Alvie and David were known for their "open door policy," offering a home and guidance to anyone in need, including Joe Vinton during his teenage years. In later years, this hospitality extended to her grandchildren and their partners, earning her the title of honorary grandmother to many in Christine.

Her family treasures individual memories of her vibrant spirit: Elaine remembers their long road trips filled with deep talks and singing hymns; Beverly recalls Alvie serving as her nail model for her cosmetology test, sporting bright red polish on just one hand; and her grandson Daniel affectionately nicknamed her "Lightning" for her legendary ability to switch topics in an instant—a name the whole family eventually adopted.

Alvie was preceded in death by her husband, David Smith Sr.; her son, David Smith Jr.; and her grandson-in-law, Tex Vernig.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy Fleming; her brothers, Rick and Jeff Howard; and her daughters and their husbands, Elaine (Harry) Hewitt, and Beverly (Shannon) Kron. Her legacy lives on through her five grandchildren, Dana (Skylar) Nelson, Daniel (Gina) Strakos, Trent Strakos, Amanda (Andrew) Ritter, and Meagan (Billy) O'Dell, as well as her 12 great-grandchildren: Summer, Brook, Meadow, Michael, Emmery, Landon, Logan, Lauryn, Christopher, Mallory, Maverick, and Lynnleigh.

Alvie's presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Services for Alvie are scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the Pleasanton Church of Christ, located at 1003 N Main Street, Pleasanton, starting with a visitation at 9:00 am and a funeral service at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Christine City Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband.
