Arnold Wayne Thomas (1933–2026)

Arnold Wayne Thomas, known to most as Wayne, passed away peacefully at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, innovation, and deep devotion to his family.

Born in San Antonio, Texas in 1933, Wayne was the son of Homer and Ada Thomas. He grew up alongside his older brother, Weldon, who was four years his senior and someone Wayne admired deeply. The two shared a close bond throughout their lives, and Wayne often reflected fondly on their childhood in San Antonio—telling stories of the adventures they shared growing up. Following in Weldon's footsteps, Wayne played basketball for the Thomas Jefferson High School Mustangs, where his competitive spirit and natural leadership began to take shape.

After graduating from high school, Wayne attended the University of Houston, setting the stage for a pioneering career in broadcast television. Wayne was an original employee of Channel 13, KTRK-TV in Houston, where he helped shape the early days of local television. A true innovator, he was instrumental in major projects, including the camera configuration for the Houston Astrodome—work that helped define how
live events and news were experienced by viewers. His influence extended across numerous live news productions and set new standards within the industry. He later served as News Director at KDFW, the CBS affiliate in Dallas, before embarking on a distinguished leadership career with Times Mirror. Over more than 20 years as a Vice President and General Manager, Wayne led several prominent stations, including KTBC in Austin, the NBC affiliate in Birmingham, and the ABC affiliate in St. Louis. He was widely respected as a natural leader—steady, disciplined, and known for leading by example.

Wayne proudly served in the United States Army, an experience that deeply shaped his character. He often credited his time in the military with instilling the strong work ethic, resilience, and leadership principles that defined both his career and personal life. At the heart of Wayne's life was his love for his wife, Dixie Rhea Thomas. For over 40 years, theirs was a partnership admired by many—built on mutual love and respect, unwavering support, and deep affection. As Wayne's career ascended and advanced from market to market, Dixie was there every step of the way, creating a warm and welcoming home wherever life took them. She was truly the perfect complement to Wayne, and together they built a life rich in love and family.

He is survived by his sons, Michael, Mark, and Brian; his daughter, Lynn; and his cherished grandchildren, Madeline, Elizabeth, Rachel, Mark Ryan, Zachery, and Sara Thomas.

Wayne will be remembered as a pioneer in television, a respected leader, a proud veteran, and above all, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Wayne was a force of good, and his stories, his values, and his legacy will live on through all who knew and loved him.
