Obituary

Barbara Nell Shelton, beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and educator, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on May 27, 1952, Barbara dedicated her life to teaching and shaping young minds. She spent many fulfilling years as an English teacher and cheerleading sponsor, forging real and lasting relationships with her students. Her impact on their lives extended far beyond the classroom, as she taught them not only the love of literature but also the importance of kindness and respect.

Barbara held a Bachelor's Degree and was a talented writer, earning numerous awards during her college years. She was also a gifted musician, having played the piano and flute throughout her life. One of her greatest joys was sharing her love of music by teaching her grandchildren to play the piano, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Her warm and infectious sense of humor endeared her to friends and family alike. A true animal lover, Barbara found comfort in the companionship of her beloved pets. She enjoyed making her famous crack glass cinnamon candy, a treat that became a beloved staple at family gatherings.

Barbara found great comfort and joy in her faith, attending church services whenever she was able and later enjoying live-streamed services from home. She shared an unbreakable bond with her mother, Joyce Mangum, who was not only her parent but her best friend, as they would speak every night.

Barbara cherished the memories created during family visits to Freer, Texas, with her Aunt DoeDoe and Uncle Dick, where they attended the Church of Christ together. Her legacy of kindness, love, and laughter will remain in the hearts of those she touched.

Barbara is survived by her mother Joyce Mangum; daughter, Tiffany Janney (David), sons Paul Shelton (Michelle) and Charlie Shelton (Daphne); sister Jeanne Starnes (Garry); brother-in-law Rudy Fuller; grandchildren Derek and Logan Emerson, Dayna Spaulding, Andrew Janney, James, Jarrett, America, and Amberlee Shelton, Landon Sibery, Mikala Shelton and Mackenzie Fowler; great-grandchildren Magnolia and Asher Emerson, Elizabeth and W.D. Everett Spaulding, Ellie, Henson and Sutton Shelton, Adlee and Amri Flores, and Brexton Fowler.

She is preceded in death by her father L.B. Mangum; siblings Sharon Fuller and Willie Mangum; and her beloved husband and one true love, Charles Wayne Shelton.  He was tragically taken and her heart was never the same after his death.

A funeral service to celebrate Barbara's life will be held on June 8, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Hurley Funeral Home, with visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Barbara will be laid to rest in a burial ceremony following the service at Rutledge Cemetery in Poteet, Texas.

In this time of loss, we remember Barbara for her unwavering spirit, her love for her family, and the lasting impact she had on all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
