Betty Mejia Jaramillo, passed away on 21 February, 2026 at the inspiring age of 90 years old.  She was born on 23 October, 1935 to Ysidro Mejia and Juanita Riojas Mejia.  Although her mother died when she was a small child, she was blessed with a large family that included a step-mother, Rafella Mejia, four brothers and two sisters; Juan Jose Mejia, Ysidro Mejia Jr (deceased), Ruth Mejia, Daniel Mejia, Antonio Mejia and Rosalinda Diaz.  Betty married Baldemar Jaramillo (deceased) on 26 December 1951 and moved to San Antonio where she lived the majority of her years. Together, they had three children, Lydia Avery (Charles), David Jaramillo (Cheryl), and John Joe Jaramillo (deceased), seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, currently on the way.  Betty also had countless extended family members, friends, and many others who blurred the lines between family and friends.

The majority of Betty's life was fully devoted to caring for her loved ones. While she was young, she helped care for her siblings at home. After she married, she began growing her own family and raised her children.  In her middle years, she was the primary care giver for many of her grandchildren.  Still, as an older woman, she helped raise great-grandchildren in her own home also. Betty's house was called home by many-throughout the years.  It served as a safe place for numerous neighborhood children across several decades as well.

As a young girl, Betty was never able to finish school.  In spite of her limited education, she was extremely intelligent and even personally taught her grandchildren to read, write, and count before they attended kindergarten. She also trained and worked as a beautician for many years and worked in a computer manufacturing plant later on. As an older woman, Betty served as an in-home caregiver for several different women.  She had a natural ability to care for others and was well-trusted to handle their needs.  One way or another, Betty always worked to earn a living even while caring for her own family.

Betty's favorite things to do were drive, shop, and support her family and friends any way she could.  She was often found helping people in her life accomplish various tasks such as driving them to doctor's appointments, helping them cash checks and pay bills, doing grocery shopping, visiting government offices, etc. It did not matter what help was needed, she was always first in line and the most reliable person one could hope for.

Any chapter of Betty's life that is considered, there is evidence of sacrifice, generosity, kindness, laughs, and unconditional love.  At 90 years old, she was still a vibrant and fiercely loving woman.  She kept smiles on the faces of everyone around her, including her family, friends, nurses, and even strangers, right up until her last day.  She was a pure blessing to all who were lucky enough to know her and will be painfully missed.  Our angel on Earth, Betty Jaramillo (Mamo), is now our guardian angel in heaven.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the reciting of the rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home.  Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026 at St. Andrew Catholic Church and burial in San Ysidro Cemetery.
