C. Hugh
Herrington
Jun 13, 1925 — Jan 10, 2022
Pleasanton
Hugh Herrington, 96, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 10, 2022, in San Antonio, TX. Hugh was born on June 13, 1925, in Sentinel, Oklahoma to Clyde and Ora Herrington.
Hugh was a graduate of the Amarillo Class of 1945. He was active with community service starting at a tender age and volunteered for numerous years with the Salvation Army. Hugh has been a faithful servant of God since he was 6 years old. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and even planned on going into the ministry until he chose to join the United States Navy where he proudly served from June of 1943 to January 1946, leaving as Petty Officer Second Class. During his time in the Navy, he received the Victory Medal World War II while serving upon the USS General J.R. Brook (AP-132). During his service in the U.S. Navy, he sailed all over the world including Europe, Africa, The Middle East, all over America, and the Asiatic-Pacific.
On June 12, 1948, he met and married the love of his life, Clare Schafer. Hugh then went on to work for Santa Fe Railroad as Labor Relations Manager for 39 years before retiring. After settling in Pleasanton, Texas in 1980, he and his beloved wife, Clare, bought an RV, loaded up their cat, Tiger, and the three of them set off to travel all over the United States and Canada.
Hugh was a firefighter for the Pleasanton Fire Department for many years and began serving as Assistant Fire Chief in 1986, later becoming the Fire Chief. He was a faithful member of The St. Johns' Lutheran Church since 1980, Life Member of VFW #6970 in Poteet, a former member of the American Legion, and one of the charter members of the Atascosa Crime Stoppers. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed photography, growing exotic plants, refurbishing furniture and he even obtained his Commercial Pilot's License. To say that he was a proud, all-American man would be an understatement. He was Patriot, who gave his entire life to serving his God, his community, and his country. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
He is preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Ora Herrington as well as his sister Vera Irene Parmley. He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Clare Herrington, his nephew Bruce Parmley, along with several other nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton with burial in St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery in Jourdanton.
