Carl Eugene Johannes (AKA Pops, Joe, and Papasaurus), 80, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on July 10, 2023, surrounded by friends and family. Carl was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa on July 29, 1942, to parents Ralph Johannes and Dolly (Bonham) Johannes.
Carl attended Laurens High School in Laurens, Iowa where he graduated in 1961. On December 18, 1963, he joined the United States Air Force where he served 23 years. Upon retiring from the Air Force, he worked for the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio for 17 years. On March 17, 1997, Carl married the love of his life, Sallie McBride Johannes and they were married for 27 years. He loved God, going to church, fishing, singing, woodworking, but most importantly spending time with family and friends. Carl was well known for helping anyone in need, and his kindness was always accompanied with a smile. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Johannes and Dolly (Bonham) Johannes, sisters, Donna and Lillian Johannes, brothers, Robert, Arthur, and Phil Johannes, son, Jimmie Joe McBride and grandson, Johnny McBride.
Carl is survived by his spouse Sallie Johannes, sons, David (Bryna) Johannes, Douglas (Terry) Johannes, Mac McBride, Andrew McBride, and Jamie (Ashley) McBride, daughter, Tara (Shannon) Birkholz, 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on August 5, 2023, starting with a visitation from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 pm at Hurley Funeral Home, located at 118 W. Oaklawn Road in Pleasanton. A reception will follow at the First Baptist Church Pleasanton, located at 400 N. Reed Street, Pleasanton, Texas 78064, from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm. Burial will occur after the reception at Jourdanton City Cemetery located at 305 Walton Avenue, Jourdanton, Texas 78026.
