Daniel Johnston
Mchazlett
Dec 3, 1946 — Jan 12, 2026
Charlotte
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Daniel Johnston McHazlett, a cherished husband, father, and friend, who left us peacefully on January 12, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on December 3, 1946, in Eagle Pass, TX, Daniel spent much of his life in San Antonio, where he developed a lifelong passion for cars, fueled by the lessons taught to him by his father.
Daniel was the go-to guy for anyone experiencing car troubles. With a remarkable knack for understanding mechanics, he could identify cross-compatible parts in a heartbeat and was always willing to lend a helping hand, even to strangers. He spent most of his working career in the salvage yard. Whether it was putting in a new engine or just sharing parts from his extensive collection, his generous spirit knew no bounds.
He loved his family deeply, with a particular fondness for his beloved grandson, Patrick Noel McHazlett. The loss of Patrick weighed heavily on Daniel's heart, but through it all, he carried on with resilience and love. Daniel was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially in oldies music and tinkering with antique cars, skills he embraced throughout his life.
All who knew Daniel can attest to his large heart and unwavering support for family and friends. He will be missed dearly by all whose lives he touched. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years Dela McHazlett; sons Justin Cody McHazlett, Roland Vann and Jesse Tijerina; daughters Sammantha McHazlett and Brenda Martinez; granddaughters Caylee and Alyssa Tijerina, Brooke Rios, and Nicole McHazlett; grandsons John Daniel, Justin "Jay", Ernie and Kevin McHazlett; brothers Charlie and Duane McHazlett; sisters Francis, Norma, Nancy and Margie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many good friends.
He is preceded in death by parents Charlie Severita McHazlett; daughter Cassandra McHazlett; son Ronnie Joe Tijerina; sister Doris Campa and beloved grandson Patrick Noel McHazlett.
Funeral services will be held at Hurley Funeral Home on January 19, 2026. Public viewing will be from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a ceremony at 1:00 PM, where we will come together to celebrate the incredible life of Daniel. Interment will follow in Chilipitin Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mark Odgen, Jacob Regaledo, Bryan Ybarbo, Dereck Vera, Hector Torres and Israel Robles.
In this time of mourning, let us also remember the laughter, kindness, and warmth he brought into our lives. Though he may no longer be with us, his spirit will forever remain in our hearts. Amen.
