Doris J. Neugebauer

Doris Jewel Brieden Neugebauer, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 95.

Born on January 20, 1931, in Yancey, Texas, Doris was the youngest of seven children born to Thomas Alfred and Eliza Jane (Gillespie) Brieden. Growing up in a lively two-room country home without running water or electricity, she often joked about having to outrun “Bossy” the cow through the pasture just to reach the outhouse. While those early years shaped her grit and determination, she happily embraced city life later on—especially modern air conditioning.

A gifted student, Doris graduated at the top of her class from Moore High School. With the loving encouragement of her eldest sister, Veda, she pursued her calling in medicine and entered the Baptist School of Nursing in San Antonio. True to form, she also graduated at the top of her nursing class, earning her Registered Nurse credentials in 1951. Her nursing career spanned more than four decades, caring for young polio patients with the Red Cross in Harlingen, working at Robert B. Green Hospital, and dedicating many years of compassionate service to Downtown Baptist Hospital and Bexar County Hospital (now University Hospital) before retiring in 1996.

While working in South Texas, Doris met the love of her life, Joseph Francis Neugebauer, on a blind double date arranged alongside her sister Florence. Doris and Joe were married on May 25, 1952, beginning 56 devoted years of marriage. Doris was fiercely dedicated to her family, though her deep faith in God always came first. A lifelong Baptist, she loved nothing more than singing the old hymns at church every Sunday—and singing them loud! Her caring heart extended well beyond her family, often taking in and feeding neighborhood stray dogs and cats.

Doris brought warmth and joy into everything she did, especially around the family table. She was famous for her love of spicy food and hot sauce—hardly anything was ever too spicy for her—and her incredible seafood gumbo was a family treasure. Her homemade chicken and dumplings were an absolute favorite for both her sons, John and David, and all of the grandkids; it was such a cherished staple that Janice even learned the recipe directly from Doris so she could carry on the tradition for John, Matthew, and Michael. Alongside her savory cooking, her delicious banana pudding was always a hit!

Countless cherished memories were made during family trips. Doris and Joe started a beloved tradition of taking their sons, and later their grandchildren, to Chalk Bluff Park on the Nueces River and to Port Aransas every summer. She always packed plenty of Oreos, Nutter Butter cookies, and many other goodies for every family trip.

Her grandchildren will forever treasure her contagious laugh, sharp sense of humor, and cozy afternoons sitting together watching funny movies. Her grandchildren warmly remember the summers spent with Doris and Joe while their parents worked, especially the fun-filled day trips Doris planned to Malibu Castle, putt-putt golfing, and Enchanted Rock.

Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Joseph F. Neugebauer; her parents, Thomas Alfred and Eliza Jane Brieden; her siblings, Veda Brieden, Bernice Brieden Cockrell, Lolete Brieden White, Florence Brieden Morris, Cecil Brieden, and Altha Lou Brieden Dubose; and her daughter-in-law, Janice Neugebauer.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through her sons, John Neugebauer and David Neugebauer; her grandchildren, Matthew Neugebauer and his wife Aimee, and Michael Neugebauer and his wife Krista; her great-grandchildren, Braydon and Hailey Neugebauer, and Everitt and Liam Neugebauer; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who were blessed to know her.

• Visitation: Wednesday, September 2, 2026, starting at 9:00 AM at Hurley Funeral Home.
• Funeral Service: Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Hurley Funeral Home.
• Interment: Moore Memorial Cemetery in Moore, Texas, following the service.
