Gil Romo,
Sr.
Sep 1, 1945 — Mar 12, 2023
Charlotte
Gil Romo Sr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 12, 2023. He defied all odds and defeated cancer twice among other illnesses, stating his faith and love for his family were why he fought so hard to live.
Gil was born on September 1, 1945, in La Parita, to Francisco Romo and Delfina Luebano Romo. He was the youngest of eight children. In October of 1965, he joined the Marines where he was part of the First Battalion First Marines Infantry Division and served one tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He was seriously wounded and recuperated in Yokosuka, Japan. Gil was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1968 and received a Purple Heart medal. In 1969 Gil met the love of his life and married Ruby Gonzales and they began their life in Charlotte. They were married for 53 years.
Gil was very active in his community. He was a Little League coach for over 15 years, coaching many of the local youth who would still seek him out as adults. He was also a proud lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where he would volunteer his time, was part of numerous committees, and especially enjoyed attending ACTS Retreats throughout the years.
Gil retired from San Miguel Electric Coop in 2001 after a cancer diagnosis which he was given six months to live. He not only beat cancer once but twice, always saying he had to live for his grandbabies. Gil was an avid coin collector, enjoyed researching family genealogy on Ancestry.com, tending to his yard and plants, and proudly watching his grandchildren grow.
Gil is survived by his loving wife Ruby; his daughters Gilda and Clarissa (Manuel); his sons Gil Jr. (Melissa) and Robert (Lourdes); grandchildren Madeline Romo, Ilissa Romo, Iliana Romo, Gil Romo III, AnaLynn Tijerina, Jagger Tijerina and Nathan Romo; his brother Raymond Romo, sisters-in-law Irene Romo, Bessie Romo, Eva Romo, Minnie Romo along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Gil is preceded in death by his parents, Francisco Romo and Delfina Luebano Romo; his brothers, Alfonso Romo, Delfino Romo, Francisco Romo Jr., Emeterio Romo, Leon Romo; his sister, Maria Magdalena Romo Zuniga, brother-in-law Pete Zuniga, sister-in-law Isabel Romo and an infant grandson.
