It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our mother, Hortensia Maldonado Briseno, of Charlotte, Texas on the early morning of Monday, September 9, 2024, at the age of 90, with her family by her side.

Our loving mother was born on Saturday, November 11, 1933, in Charlotte, Texas to Zaragoza and Porfiria (Medrano) Maldonado.

Hortensia will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Ida Briseno Ramos and husband Joe; son, Macario "Mike" Briseno, Jr and wife Lenora; and her sister Sarah Cruz. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 25 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Macario Piedra "Mike" Briseno, Sr; infant son, Richard Briseno; sister, Ofelia Zulaica and husband Genaro; and brother-in-law, Flavio "Clyde" Cruz.

Hortensia attended school in Charlotte up to Grade 5. Since she had no bothers, her father elected her to work by his side in the fields planting and harvesting corn, peanuts and watermelons. In 1952 she married Mike Briseno, Sr. Together they raised a son, Mike, Jr and a daughter, Ida. In 1954 they lost an infant son at the age of 3 months in Eloy, AZ where they worked as migrant workers. Over the years Hortensia worked in the food industry as a waitress and cleaned houses. She worked hard much of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family, eating out, dancing and playing the slot machines.

The family wishes to send a Special Thank You to Yolanda Bermea and Josefina Garcia for their outstanding compassion and care as well as to the New Century Hospice nurses.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Hurley Funeral Home from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Charlotte Community Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Ramos, Marco DeLeon, Jade Caballero, John Briseno, Luis Tijerina and Jordan Chavez. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeremiah Ramos, Jonathan Ramos, Javier Ramos and Ricky Wickwire.
