Dr. Jack H. Chew was reunited with his creator February 24, 2023, after a sudden, unexpected illness following a recent surgery. Jack was born in El Paso, Texas on April 11, 1948, to Jack Fun Chew and Doise Walker (Chew) Farrington. He grew up in the lower valley with his two sisters and many Chew cousins. The product of Chinese immigrants and multi-generation Central Texans, Jack grew up understanding the strong work ethic of immigrant families while also appreciating the pride of previous generations who fought for Texas independence and statehood.

Graduating from Austin High School in 1966, Jack was a life-long learner earning his bachelor's degree at Texas Western University (later UTEP) before attaining a Master of Divinity at Southwestern Theological Seminary, his Master of Education at UTEP, and his Ph.D. in Instructional Technology, fulfilling his dream of becoming a Texas Longhorn.

A "Jack of all trades" he served in the Navy Reserves during the Vietnam era and began his career in ministry as a Baptist pastor before entering the field of education. Jack taught elementary school in El Paso before becoming the Migrant Services Coordinator for Socorro ISD. In this role in the early 1990's, he started one of the first distance-learning programs in the country, providing the opportunity for children of migrant farm workers to attain their high school diplomas. Jack's influence on remote education continued in the Big Bend area, establishing new technology infrastructure in Presidio ISD and lecturing on distance learning and instruction at Sul Ross University. Dr. Chew's career continued with teaching at the university level and consulting Title I schools.

Jack enjoyed being active outside with his wife, daughters, son-in-law, grandson, and fellow military veterans. Some of his favorite activities were riding bikes during spring wildflower season, hiking, swimming, and volunteering at ultramarathon trail races. Jack longed to be more mobile, and his family takes comfort knowing he's finally running free on heavenly trails.

Jack is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years, Lynda Casbeer Chew, and their daughters Charlotte Chew and Doise Chew Miers, her husband Josh, and the light of Jack's life, his grandson Joseph. He is also survived by his sisters Cynthia Nations and Susan Murphy and their daughters and grandchildren.
