Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Doris Jaqueline Wheeler Naylor, a true cowgirl and matriarch.  Jackie, know to many as Mama Naylor, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at the age of 94 surrounded by her loving family.

Jackie grew up on her parent's ranch in McMullen County where she, along with her brother Joe, spent their days swimming in the river, milking cows, and riding horses.  After graduating from Tilden High School, she attended Texas A&I University.  Some of her fondest memories were spent with her cousins, painting the town, and dancing to Rancho Grande.

On December 23, 1950, she married Kenneth Naylor and together they farmed and ranched in Calliham, then later did so in McMullen County.  Along with ranching, Jackie helped run their family business, The Gun and Saddle Shop, worked at the Live Oak County Courthouse and as a substitute teacher.  Her true love, though, was being in the country and all that came with it.  She picked up and raised anything wild, including fawns and javalinas.  She drove a grain truck, and worked cattle with the best of them.  She loved her family and friends fiercely, and was a protector for everyone she cared for.  Jackie was one of a kind, and a true Texas legend.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, James Earl Wheeler and Gladys Snowden Wheeler, her beloved husband Kenneth Earl Naylor, a great grandson Jett Wayne Pilgrim, and her brother James Earl "Joe" Wheeler, Jr.

She is survived by her son Jim Naylor, daughter Jennifer Shepherd and husband Rodney, grandchildren James Naylor and wife Jennilee, Stoney Naylor and wife Amy, Jenna Hennig and husband Chase, and Jordie Pilgrim and husband Ronnie.  She is also survived by her great grandchildren Devin Naylor, Jaidyn Naylor, Jasey Naylor, Emma Naylor, Hondo Naylor, Dylan Naylor, Brady Hennig, Gage Hennig, Piper Hennig, and Paige Pilgrim, and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Services for Jackie will be held graveside on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at 4:30 pm at the Hilltop Cemetery in Tilden where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved Kenneth.

Serving as pall bearers are Rodney Shepherd, James Naylor, Stoney Naylor, Devin Naylor, Chase Hennig and Ronnie Pilgrim.  Honorary pall bearers are Bobby Graves, Hugh Ray McClaughtery, Scotty Mc Claughtery, Paul Peeler, Cliff Wheeler, Forrest Wheeler, and Dana Wilson.
