Jose Luis Campos, Sr. passed away in San Antonio on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the age of 75. He was born in San Diego, Texas on February 20, 1951, to Guadalupe and Carolina (Gonzalez) Campos.
Raised in a household that valued education and respect, Jose instilled these principles in his children. He was known for his "stern" demeanor and his high expectations, always pushing his kids to aim for A's in school. Jose wasn't just a father; he was a mentor, guiding them through life's ups and downs with unwavering love and support.
Jose began his career in the oil field at just 17 years old, dedicating 38 years to a profession he cherished. His hard work and respect in the industry were a testament to his strong values. Alongside his career, he found joy in coaching little league baseball for 13 years, sharing his love for sports, particularly football and basketball, which he played during his time at Charlotte High School. After graduating, he attended Uvalde Junior College, always seeking to improve his skills and knowledge.
An avid outdoorsman, Jose loved nothing more than spending his weekends hunting and fishing. He took pride in flint knapping and had a passion for collecting indigenous artifacts, like arrowheads, often sharing these interests with his family. A BBQ enthusiast, he could often be found grilling delicious meals, always with a drink of tequila in hand, enjoying life to the fullest.
Jose is survived by his former wife, Gladys Yolanda Orta Campos; daughter, Yvonne Marie Campos Gonzales (Rodolfo); sons, Jose Luis Campos, Jr. (Sonia) and Gabriel Augustin Campos (Cynthia); brothers, Ruben Campos, Sr. (Adelaida) and Guadalupe Campos, Jr. (Sylvia); sisters, Yolanda McDowell (Wayne) and Glenda Barrera (Emilio); grandchildren, Jose Luis Campos, III, Luis Theodoro Guadalupe Campos, Brandon Garcia, Destini Campos, Desiree Campos, Dustin Campos, Diego Campos, Dakota Campos Ramirez (Ramon), Anthony Campos and Harley-Jane Campos Rodas (Marck); and great-granchildren, Zyla Campos, Joselyn Campos, Serenity Campos, Tobias Campos, Massie Campos, Faith Hernandez, Ruby Hernandez, Lylah Campos, Haevyn Campos, Carter Bubba Campos, Baby Campos (on the way), Izadora Ramirez, Ramon "Gordo" Ramirez and expecting to making his appearance in June, Baby Marcello Rodas .
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Reyes G. Campos
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, March 27, 2026 starting with a visitation at Hurley Funeral Home from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm with a reciting of the rosary at 7:00 pm. Mass will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at St. Matthew Catholic Church starting at 10:00 am, followed by interment at Campos Cemetery.
