Obituary

Maria Consuelo (Connie) Diaz, passed away on May 2, 2024, at the age of ninety in Jourdanton, Texas. Connie was born August 7, 1933, to Timoteo Diaz and Ysabel Guzman Diaz on a ranch outside of George West, Live Oak County, Texas. Connie was the youngest in her family consisting of three brothers and one sister. All three of her brothers served in World War II at the same time and she was always enormously proud of them for serving our Country.

At the age of fourteen, Connie met the love of her life, Erasmo (Eddie) Diaz. They married on November 16, 1952, at St. George Catholic Church in George West, Texas. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage. Connie and Eddie moved to Germany for about 3 years while Eddie served in the Army. Upon their return to the States, they settled in San Antonio, Texas. Connie began working as an LVN at Santa Rosa Hospital until moving to Pleasanton in 1966.  She continued nursing at the Jourdanton Hospital and all the nursing home facilities in the county. In later years, she worked with home health services, the San Miguel plant and Gonzaba Medical Clinic in San Antonio. In total, Connie's nursing career lasted approximately 39 years.

Connie loved children and was happiest when around them. In 1972-1974, she and Eddie started the first girls' softball league in Pleasanton consisting of five teams competing during the summer months. Some of those very softball players took care of her toward the end.

Over the years, Connie participated in many civic organizations and was one of the first CASA representatives in Atascosa County. She grew up during the Great Depression. Friends and relatives that knew her when she was a child and young adult have told stories of how she was always trying to feed everyone in her community. As she got older, that yearning expanded into feeding anyone that came into her home. By the time a visitor stepped across the threshold of her front door, Connie was trying to feed them.

Connie loved the outdoors and genuinely enjoyed working out in the yard and helping Eddie with whatever project was going on at the time. Their perfect date was riding their John Deere mowers while holding hands across their property on FM 3006. Connie loved her family tremendously and was always a notable example of strength. She was very adamant that her grandchildren learn whatever skills necessary to survive in this world under any circumstances.

Connie Diaz was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, Erasmo (Eddie) Diaz, her parents, Timoteo Diaz and Ysabel Guzman Diaz, her brothers, Octavio, Jose and Cosme Diaz, and her sister, Julia Diaz Puga.

Connie is survived by her daughter, Esmeralda (Landa) Diaz, and her son, David Nicholas Diaz (Kay). Connie is also survived by her five grandchildren, Amanda D. Ramos (Christopher Lopez), Cydni A. Diaz, Zoei K. Diaz, Madiline B. Diaz, Keeton Diaz, and great-granddaughter, Adelita Lopez.

The Diaz family would like to thank the entire staff and nurses at Jourdanton Nursing and Rehabilitation and Gentiva Hospice for their kindness and their gracious and compassionate care for Connie the past couple of years.

A woman that was bigger than life, told you exactly what she was thinking with no apologies, she was the very definition of the word "Matriarch." Her examples of tremendous love, honesty and humor will be deeply missed.
