Sylvia Rodriguez, née Ochoa, was born on February 9, 1943, and passed on May 31, 2026. She was the first child of Jose Ochoa and Raquel Uribe, who preceded her in death. She is survived by sisters and brothers-in-law Gloria Solis, Martina Melendez, Rosa Linda and Danny Santos, Elizabeth "Bessie" and Joe Rodriguez, and Ermalinda "Birdie" and Mike Galindo. Her sisters were like her daughters, but eventually they became some of her closest friends. Through them, she is also survived by countless nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her husband of over 54 years, Louis Alvarado Rodriguez. Together, they shared daughters and sons-in-law: Rachael and Ernie Zapata and Rebecca and ChetMaddox. In their later years, they also cherished their grandchildren: Alyssa, husband James, Matthew, Taylor, and Maggie. She left an unmistakable mark on them, watching over as they made their homes, navigated life, and built families of their own. For the last decade of her life, she relished being able to give her love to her great-grandchildren, Allie and Lucas Aguirre.

Sylvia was a stern and gentle soul. She was happiest when she was spending time with her family and sharing her wisdom across multiple generations — traits she inherited from her father whom she adored. She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in in her 70's, and she carried it with her until the end. In her last years, she took pride in knowing that she never let it get in the way of living her life just as she always had.

She wanted the most and best of everyone and never settled less. She believed we all ought to shape our homes and serve our families just as diligently as she did. Her 83 years were a gift, having lost her own parents and countless friends too young. Anyone who knew her will tell you she was a loyal friend, and that she was as loving as she was feisty. She taught those around her how to command a family like she did; she was the matriarch of matriarchs. Despite her absence, her voice and spirit remain with so many of us. She is unforgettable in every way, and her family will miss her dearly.

The Rodriguez family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Maria's life during the upcoming services. A public viewing will be held on June 6, 2026, from 9:00 AM - 11:15 AM, with the Rosary to begin at 10:00 AM at Hurley Funeral Home and a Mass to follow at 12:00 PM at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Maria will be laid to rest at San Ysidro Cemetery.
