Obituary

Marta R. Davila passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at the age of 88. She was born in Poteet on January 22, 1935, to Florencio Davila and Cecilia (Rodriguez) Davila.

Marta was a very devoted member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Poteet, where she dedicated most of her time by playing the guitar and singing with the Spanish choir, led in praying the rosary before mass, helped clean the church for many years and assisted at the church festival. Marta also taught Catechism for many years and was also a Cursillista. Marta ran the church booth during the Poteet Strawberry Festival for over 30 years, selling strawberry shortcake. She would also assist with the secretarial duties of the church office. She loved going with Father Albert and other church members to visit the sick at the nursing home and hospitals.

Marta worked with Dr. Gerald B. Phillips for over 30 years, where her duties included taking x-rays, before eventually working as the insurance clerk.

Marta was a kind soul who deeply loved her animals.  She had many cats and dogs throughout her lifetime, with "Sandy" being her faithful companion. You would also catch her in the kitchen where she cooked great meals and made the best homemade desserts! She made the best buñuelos and tamales.  She loved to sew and sing.  Marta always chose songs according to the readings of the mass.

Marta is survived by her sisters, Lupe Briones, Linda Gonzales, Margaret Davila, Angela Ledesma and Mary Davila; her maternal aunts, Martina Rodriguez, Porfiria Rodriguez and Dominga Rodriguez; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
