Marta Catalina Gutierrez, 69, of Pleasanton, passed away Friday May 19, 2023, in San Antonio Texas, surrounded by her loving family.

Marta was born on October 3, 1953, at Parker Ranch in Atascosa County to Enrique and Santos (Guerrero) Gutierrez. She was the eldest of six children.

Marta loved four things greatly in her life: Jesus, her family, her pets, and Elvis Presley.

Marta graduated from Pleasanton High School, class of 1972. She went on to attend Bee County College and received her Associates Degree. Always wanting to increase her knowledge, later in life she also took classes at Our Lady of the Lake University and St. Edward's University.

Although Marta never married or had children, she saw her youngest sister, Gracie, as the daughter she never had. She was honored to be the godmother to her best friend's son. She was also very involved in the lives of her nieces and nephews, and was a nurturing mother figure to many.

Marta worked most of her adult life for the State of Texas at the MHMR State Agency in Austin. Austin was "her town," and she loved the eclectic, hippie-vibe the city used to have. She had a wonderful group of friends who she spent a lot of time with, and they even formed a card group to play canasta on a monthly basis.

Marta loved to travel and was always up for a road trip. She visited over half of the states, and took memorable international trips to Italy and Australia. One of her greatest achievements was the trip to Italy to meet her life-long pen-pal, whom she started writing to in high school.

Marta chose to retire early so she could move to Pleasanton and care for her mother. Her friends and co-workers threw her an Elvis-themed send off, complete with an Elvis impersonator. Once she settled in Pleasanton, she followed in her mother's foot-steps and became very active and involved with St. Andrew Catholic Church. Most recently, she and her sister Linda led the rosary on Sunday mornings, and she volunteered at the church office.

Marta was preceded in death by her parents Enrique and Santos Gutierrez; her brother and sister-in-law Henry and Mary (Resendez) Gutierrez; and great-nephew Michael "Mikey" Resendez.

She is survived by her siblings, Rosa Linda Gutierrez of Pleasanton, Ricardo (Lucy) Gutierrez of Pleasanton, Ronaldo (Angie) Gutierrez of San Antonio, and Gracie (Fred) Johnson of Austin; sister-in-law Josie Martinez of Pleasanton; numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces; extended family, life-long friends, and her fur babies Lester and Pepper.

Pallbearers will be RJ Gutierrez, EJ Gutierrez, Paul Resendez, Diego Garcia, John Curran, and Kody Zuniga.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Hurley Funeral Home from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm with recitation of the rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. Andrew Catholic Church with interment to follow in St. Andrew Cemetery #2.
