Martha Elizabeth Byrom died peacefully with her daughter and son-in-law by her side in Austin, Texas on February 4, 2022, at the age of 89. Martha was born in Poteet, Texas to Robert Truett Byrom and Effie Bernice Davidson-Byrom on March 28, 1932.

Martha was the second of three children and grew up on her parent's farm and ranch in Atascosa County. She graduated from Poteet High School and while in school was chosen as the first ever Poteet Strawberry Festival Queen in 1948.

A thirst for learning stayed with Martha throughout her life and she doggedly pursued a college degree while being a wife and mother to five children. Her determination led to a B.A. from Angelo State University in 1975.

Martha relished the company of the Byrom and Davidson families and every year for as many years as it was held, she gathered her family and returned to Poteet for the Davidson family reunion.

The Davidson reunions were always preceded by Sunday morning church services and Martha was a devoted Christian. As a child, her favorite verse was the 23 ^rd Psalm and as an adult, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

When asked what she loved most about motherhood Martha replied, "I love everything about it!" When asked the most difficult thing a mother has to do, she said, "Turn loose and let go."

Martha's varied interests in life led her to work as a Welfare Technician for the State of Texas, a newspaper teletype operator and proofreader, an auditor and Enforcement Officer for the Texas State Comptroller, an auditor for McLennan County and an administrative assistant at IBM.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Robert Byrom, Jr., her sister Mary Anna Massey, a son Ben Truett Grizzard, and a daughter, Sarah Ellen Grizzard.

She is survived by her son, Hollis Grizzard, Jr. and wife Marise McDermott, her daughter Martha Ann Grizzard and husband Danney Ursery, son Daniel Hawkins, ten grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton from 10 a.m. until Noon on Saturday, Feb. 12th. A graveside service will follow at the Rutledge Cemetery, Atascosa County beginning at 1:30 p.m.
