Martha G. Cunningham fought a long and courageous battle and passed on to be with her Lord and Savior on January 12, 2023. She was 59 years old and died at home in Schertz, Texas, surrounded by her family. Martha was born December 16, 1963, in Taylor, Texas, to Raymond and Janie Gonzales and went to school in Charlotte, Texas. She married Stace Cunningham, and they were married 35 years. They have one daughter, Marissa, and have been residents of Schertz since 2000. Martha greatly enjoyed journal writing, spending time with family (especially eating out), gardening (or "playing in the dirt" as she called it), memorizing Bible verses, and reading Scripture.

Martha was a devout Catholic and previously taught Catechism at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. She also frequently volunteered for vacation bible school. In addition, Martha was a committed adorer in the Adoration Ministry at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma, Texas, until health issues interfered. Martha also taught preschool for 18 years, only teaching at private Christian schools so she could spread the gospel.

Her favorite bible verse was John 3:16—For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. She wrote this scripture on all cards and letters to share the Word of God.

Martha was preceded in death by her sister, Debra Gonzales-Stepherson, her maternal grandfather, Juan Salazar; paternal grandfather, Manuel Gonzales; aunt, Adelina Gonzales; and great uncle, Trinidad Gonzales. She is survived by her husband, Stace Cunningham; daughter, Marissa Cunningham, her parents, Raymond and Janie Gonzales; sisters, Mary Gonzales, JoAnn Oropeza and her husband Eddie; niece, Kianna Oropeza; nephew, Steven Oropeza and his wife Ashlee; great niece, Evelynn Grace Oropeza; and great nephew, Luke David Ray Oropeza.

Thank you, Martha, for all the wonderful memories and life lessons. You will be greatly missed and may you rest in peace.

Martha and the family would like to extend a big thank you to all her doctors and medical staff that helped over these last several years.

Visitation will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, Texas, on Monday, January 23, 2023, from 9-11 a.m. A rosary will be recited at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Charlotte, Texas, followed by interment at Charlotte Community Cemetery.
