Marvin Elmo Deckert of Pleasanton, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in Floresville at the age of 90.  He was born in Refugio on June 14, 1933, to Elmo Ross and Bertha Mae Cumi (Weaver) Deckert

Marvin was a proud graduate of Pleasanton High School, where he excelled as a football player, earning a spot on the Wall of Honor. Following his graduation, he had the opportunity to attend college on multiple scholarships. At the age of 17, Marvin was drafted to serve in the Korean War and was stationed in Germany.

After returning from the service, Marvin married and had four children. He dedicated many years to working in the oil fields, and in 1971, he married Florence "Flo" Beck. Marvin worked for Marine Drilling in Fulton and Mathis, Texas, before he became a ranch hand for Marine Drilling in Tilden and the Storm Ranch in Center Point.

Marvin and Flo were inseparable, known for always being together. In their later years, they settled in Pleasanton, where Marvin cared for Flo until her passing. Marvin was widely recognized in town as the "tomato man" for his ability to grow the best tomatoes in the area. He could often be seen walking down Goodwin Street in his overalls, carrying a long stick, and sporting his Marine Drilling hat - a familiar sight to everyone in town.

If you ever stopped to visit, he would tell you stories, all sorts of stories and show all the kids the frozen snakes, gophers, and moles with no eyes, and if Marvin could have it mounted and hung on the wall, he did just that.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmo and Bertha Deckert; wife, Florence "Flo" Jane Deckert; sons, David Allen Deckert, William Beck and Richard Beck; daughter, Claudette Beck; great-granddaughters, Victoria Deckert, Piper Leeann Richardson and Parker Lee Richardson; sisters, Barbara Louise Deckert Thompson and husband M. L., Shirley Ruth Deckert Ham and husband Clarence, Esther Mae Deckert Everett and Earlene Cumi Deckert; and brother, Frank "Jackie" Ross Deckert.

Marvin is survived by his son, Marvin Lynn Deckert and wife Bonnie of Fred; daughters, Judy Deckert Odom and husband Steve of Rockport, and Sandy Deckert Hearne of Burnet; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandsons; brother-in-law, Nelson Lloyd Everett; and sister-in-law, Beth Riley Deckert; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are scheduled for Friday, April 19, 2024, starting with a visitation in the Hurley Funeral Home chapel, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, followed by a funeral service on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Oak Island Methodist Church, starting at 11:00 am, with burial at Oak Island Cemetery.
