Obituary

Anna "Maurene" Dunkin, born on April 15, 1937, in Laredo, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, at the age of 89. A devoted mother, wife, and friend, Maurene lived a life rich in love, creativity, and faith. She will be remembered for her passion for cooking, sewing, and needlework, hobbies that filled her home with warmth and joy. Later in life she loved playing bingo, Wii bowling, and visiting with friends and family.

For many years, Maurene embraced her role as a dedicated stay-at-home mom, nurturing her children, Kathryn and Ron, with the love and care that only a mother can provide. Once her children grew older and began to forge their own paths, Maurene stepped into the professional world, where she brought her warmth and dedication to her role at Frost Bank for many years.

Maurene and her beloved husband, Bud Dunkin, shared an enduring love that spanned 66 years. Together, they were active members of the Shearer Hills Baptist Church, where their faith and commitment to community flourished. Following Bud's passing, Maurene found it increasingly difficult to attend services, but she remained a steadfast believer, drawing strength and solace from her cherished memories.

Preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lurlene Howard, brother, B.J., and her beloved husband, Bud.  Maurene is survived by her loving children: daughter Kathryn Smith and her husband, Jerry, and son Ron Dunkin and his wife, Chris. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren, Stephanie Gould (Max), Shawn Dunkin, Breanna Kaplan (Eric), and Jerry Smith, III (Kaylynn)  as well as great-grandchildren John Hodge (Selena), and Tray Hodge (D'Laney), Shepherd Smith, Banner Smith, and Baby Kaplan due in September, along with several bonus great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who will forever cherish her memory.

Funeral services for Maurene will be held at Hurley Funeral Home on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Sand Branch Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Maurene's memory to:  Shearer Hills Baptist Church, 360 Interpark Blvd, San Antonio, TX 78216.

Maurene Dunkin will be deeply missed but always remembered for the love she shared and the lives she shaped. Her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her.
