It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maxine Veteto, a beloved teacher, devout Catholic, and cherished member of the community. Maxine, born on February 21, 1928, in Somerset, TX.  She dedicated over 40 years of her life to shaping the hearts and minds of students at Poteet ISD and Charlotte ISD. On June 10th, 1951, she married her beloved husband Hearol Ray Veteto, with whom she shared a love for travel, both within the US and abroad.

A devout parishioner at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Maxine was in Charge of Lectors and served as Lector herself and was actively involved in the Mixed Club.  She was a member of Catholic Daughters, the Retired Teacher Association and was also a member of the 93rd Bomb Group Association, showcasing her commitment to service and community.

Maxine moved her four young children and her teaching career to Bolivia for a year, where her husband served as the Director of the Peace Corps. Throughout her career as an educator, Maxine made an impact on all of those she taught.  She was always delighted to run into her former students or their families on a trip to the grocery store or at church.  Maxine had a remarkable ability to remember the names and stories of those she taught, even long after they had left her classroom. As a young college student at Incarnate Word College, she proudly modeled and worked for Wolff and Marx.

Maxine furthered her education and went back to school to obtain a Master's degree when her youngest daughter was just two years old.  Maxine was very proud of her five children and thirteen grandchildren, all of whom have pursued higher education as well. Her legacy of knowledge and the importance of academic achievement will continue to inspire and influence future generations.

Maxine was a devoted mother and grandmother.  Family visits and vacations with immediate and extended family were treasured memories for all.  Every summer Maxine and Hearol made reservations at the coast to fish and enjoy but above all be with family.  Known for her competitive spirit in sports, bridge, board games and ping pong, Maxine always brought joy and energy to every activity she participated in and maybe a little rule bending.  Her legacy of compassion, dedication, and love for life will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

Maxine is preceded in death by her husband Hearol Ray Veteto; and her sons David "Gerald" and Bryan Thomas Veteto.  She is survived by daughter Diane Veteto Garner (Alan); son Mark Veteto (Faith); daughter Laura Veteto Mikolajczyk (Kyle); daughters-in-law Lisa Veteto and Kyanne Veteto Hoak; 13 grandchildren Jessica Veteto Reese (Jody), David Veteto (Casie), Erin Veteto Salfiti (Chris), Kailey Junkman (Mitchell), Caleb Veteto (Blair), Zane Veteto, Allison Garner, Ashley Garner (Eliot Santana Lopez),  Kelsey Cayeros (Jonathan), Candace Weber (Andrew), Tiffany Weber (Justin), Samantha Mikolajczk, and Ross Mikolajczyk; 21 great-grandchildren McKinley Reese, Brindley Reese, Hudson Reese, Carleigh Reese, Clair Veteto, Dean Veteto, Jordan Salfiti, Kasen Salfiti, Jase Junkman, Avery Junkman, Cole Junkman, Ellie Santana Garner, Quinn Santana Garner, Isabelle Cayeros, Evelyn Cayeros, Issac Weber, Simon Weber, Abram Weber, Anna Weber, William Weber, and Lena Weber; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the reciting of the rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home.  Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2024 at St. Andrew Catholic Church followed by burial at St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery #2.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons Ross Mikolajczyk , David Veteto, Caleb Veteto, Jonathan Cayeros, Chris Salfiti, and Justin Weber.
