Nettie Maxine Harris Carter

Maxine was born in Christine, Texas on February 17, 1933. She attended school in Christine until her senior year, when the school closed and she transferred to Jourdanton High School. As a teen, she met the love of her life, Amos Lee Carter, Jr. "Carter" was in the Air Force, and asked her to marry him before he was sent to Germany. Maxine's dad felt she was too young and made her send the ring back. Her father was killed in an oil field accident when she was 15. Carter was later injured in Germany and transported back to San Antonio to recuperate. While recovering, he wrote to Maxine's mother, promising to love and honor Maxine the rest of his days. Maxine graduated at the age of 16 and a month later married Carter.

They lived an adventurous life. Traveling between Texas, New Mexico, and Louisiana, following the oil field jobs. In 1959, Carter took the first American oil rig to the Persian Gulf. At the age of 26, Maxine and two young daughters boarded an airplane to travel to Tehran, Iran. Thus began their life in the Middle East, moving from Tehran to Ankara to Kuwait City to Lahore, and ending their overseas journey back in Tehran.

Carter would go ahead of the family to choose a house. Maxine would have it remodeled or repainted, making a beautiful home for her family. As Carter progressed through the oil company in status, Maxine was the backbone of the family. She entertained dignitaries from foreign countries, studying the etiquette and culture of each country she lived in. She was an avid bridge player and joined bridge clubs and American Women's Clubs in each place. Maxine devoted her life to her husband and 3 daughters and families with "style & class", beautifying each place she lived. In 1974 Maxine & Carter returned to Dallas, and then eventually Pleasanton.

She had a strong faith, being raised at Christine Methodist Church and attending Protestant churches in the Middle East. She was a member of Christine Methodist Church and attended Cowboy Church.

She loved music, enjoying numerous musicians - recently "Cowboy Mike" was a favorite.

Maxine is survived by daughters: Leigh Ann Carter Ware Shearrer (James "Corky"), Lawana Carter Schroyer (Gary), and Lana Maxine Carter (Jay McCormick). Her grandchildren: Tamara Leigh Ware DeLeon (Mark), Lindsey Lee Schroyer Reese (Loren), Carter Ray Ware, and Christopher Lee Schroyer (Susie). Her great-grandchildren Hunter, Riley and Tristan Reese; Wilhelmina "Mina" Leigh and Madeline "Maddie" Lake Ware.  Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents, JB & Lavelle Chisum Harris, brothers, Dwayne & Buford Harris, sister, Bertha Mae West, son-in-law, Ernest Ray Ware.

A visitation is scheduled for Friday, September 27, 2024, at Hurley Funeral Home, starting at 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.  On Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Hurley Funeral Home, a funeral service will be held, starting at 10:00 am followed by burial at Christine City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Maxine's name to New Century Hospice or Christine Methodist Church.
