Richard Lee Porter

(July 18, 1940-September 4, 2026)

Richard Lee Porter, 86, of Pleasanton passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Friday, September 4, 2026. Born in Jourdanton, Texas, on July 18, 1940, Richard was the son of Wilber Ernest Sr. and Ruby Shafer Porter. He grew up in a lively home of ten children, surrounded by his four brothers and five sisters.

In 1958, he graduated from Pleasanton High School where he enjoyed playing multiple sports. He began his career with Alamo Iron Works in 1961, and after marrying Linda,he joined the Akers’ family peanut-farming operation. In 1973, Richard assumed the role of managing The Atascosa Peanut Co. in Poteet. Upon inheriting full ownership of The Atascosa Peanut Co., Richard and Linda expanded their business by establishing Atascosa Feed & Seed and the Porter Trucking Company. In addition to these enterprises, they began farming peanuts and owned and operated a successful cattle operation.

Upon retirement, Richard found full and complete enjoyment serving his Lord through the maintenance needs of First Baptist Church of Pleasanton, where he was ordained a deacon in 1973. He taught Sunday School, drove the church bus, and later enjoyed his role as a church greeter, always welcoming everyone with a kind smile.

Richard loved spending time on his farm, whether he was tending to his cattle or working in his garden. He regularly shared his fresh vegetables with members of his church, closely followed Chicago Cubs baseball, and enjoyed hunting and fishing with family. Above all else, Richard loved spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur, mother, Ruby, sister, Mildred Jo Soward, brothers, W.E., Norman Sr., and Lawrence, and his son-in-law, Larry Gwynn Bunch.

Among those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Linda Akers Porter; children Pamela Bunch, Debbi Dickinson and husband Jeffrey, and Ryan Porter; Grandchildren Kelsie Bunch Allen and husband Hunter, Alyssa Bunch, Kyle Dickinson, Kendall Dickinson and wife Ryland, Harley Porter, and Riley Porter; Great-grandchildren Kaden Martinez and Baby Girl Martinez due in November, and Cooper, Case, and Canton Allen, and Tate Dickinson. Richard also leaves behind five brothers and sisters, Morris Porter Sr. and wife Ilene, Matilene Kuretsch, Linda Sue Newman and husband James, Ruby Churchill, and Sandy Gasch.

Services for Richard will be on Monday, September 14, 2026 at the Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, with visitation beginning at 9 am, and the funeral service to follow at 10 am. Burial will follow at the Rutledge Cemetery in Poteet, Texas.
