Obituary

Robert Leroy Nelson, affectionately known as Bob, peacefully departed this world on April 14, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on September 11, 1943, in Milton, Florida, he was the seventh of twelve children who learned the value of hard work from an early age. Bob's journey through life was characterized by resilience, faith, and a deep love for his family.

In 1962, Bob proudly joined the Army, serving his country with honor for eight years. Following his military service, he embarked on a career with the railroad, ultimately retiring from CSX Railroads. A work-related accident may have altered the course of his life, but it never dulled his spirit or determination to keep moving forward. Bob was not one to sit still, he held several different jobs along the way, including a role in security where he met the love of his life, Wendy Nelson. They shared 34 beautiful years together.

Bob was a man grounded in his faith, devotedly studying the Word and participating as an active member of the church throughout his life. Most recently, he was a cherished member of the Patton Lane Church of Christ. Though his health limited him from attending services in person this past year, he remained connected to his faith community by watching services from home.

Bob relished hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors, particularly on the lake where he created lasting memories by fishing with his kids and pulling them around on tubes. Family camping trips across the U.S. epitomized his adventurous spirit.  In his later years, Bob found joy in caring for the family farm. A true tinkerer, he always carried a can of WD-40 and duct tape, believing that no problem was too big to fix.  He could always be seen enjoying old westerns, delving into history books about wars and railroads or riding on his John Deere tractor in the field.

Robert was preceded in death by parents LeRoy and Iva Nelson; siblings Mertie Bell Stephens, Foy "Sonny" Nelson, Coy "Peewee" Nelson, Frank Nelson, Ada Anne "Angie" Ruzicka, and Mary Gonzalez.

He is survived by his beloved wife Wendy Nelson; children Tracy (Steve) McCoy, Regina (Mike) Silva, Eric (Jackie) Boog, and Casey (Phillip) Puett; grandchildren Dakota, Austin, Cheyane and Cayla McCoy, Schuyler and Kyle Silva, Ainsley and Ella Boog, Jordan, Austin, Kaylan, Caleb Puett, Porter Phelps and Payton-Jo Puett; along with 7 great-grandchildren; sisters Grace Nell Harter, Marie (Bill) McClellan, Patricia Exline and Janis (Ray) Castillo; brother Joe (Caroline) Nelson; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Above all, Bob was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a protector at heart, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. With a servant's heart and a generous spirit, he touched the lives of many. He leaves behind—a life filled with love, faith, and a spirit that can never be dimmed. Rest in peace, Bob; you will be deeply missed but forever cherished.
