Captain Smitty Gonzales, 48, left us too soon, and it's hard to put into words what that loss really feels like. He served his community for 19 years with pride and heart. But anyone who knew him will tell you, Smitty was so much more than the badge he wore.

He was the kind of guy who could make you laugh without even trying. The moment he walked into a room, the whole place felt lighter. He had this way of bringing comfort, humor, and warmth all at once, making people feel welcomed and seen. Smitty didn't just love people. He loved them fully, loudly, and with everything he had.

And when he wasn't working, he was happiest doing the things that brought him peace and joy. He loved to fish, to barbecue, and to bring people together. If there was a family gathering, you could bet he was right in the middle of it, laughing, cooking, telling stories, or grabbing the mic on karaoke night. Those were the moments he lived for: being surrounded by the people he loved most.

His greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Desirae Gonzales, who was his partner and the person he loved with his whole heart. He leaves behind his daughters Jessalyn and Jerrilyn Gonzales, and Priscilla, Annalisa, and Alicen Delgado, the girls who were his whole world. Everything he did, every long shift, every sacrifice, every moment of pride… it all came back to them.

Smitty is also survived by his brother Santos Gonzales and sister‑in‑law Tracy Gonzales and their family; his mother Della and Jose Luis Hernandez; and his sister Natalie Gonzales and her family. They will carry pieces of him. His laugh, his stubborn streak, his heart, his stories, and the love he never held back.

Losing Smitty leaves a hole that can't be filled. But the way he lived, boldly, joyfully, and with a heart bigger than most, will stay with all of us. His spirit lives on in the memories we share, the stories we'll tell for years, and the love he poured into everyone lucky enough to know him.

He was unforgettable. And he always will be.

A visitation is scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2026 at Cowboy Fellowship, located at 561 FM 3350, Jourdanton, Texas from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm. A celebration of mass will be Tuesday, April 7, 2026, staring at 11:30 am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, located at 1608 Campbell Avenue, Jourdanton, Texas.  Services will conclude at the church.
