Obituary

Our mom, Virginia Elaine McCulloch, passed into her new life in the arms of Jesus Christ on March 21, 2025. She was born August 1, 1930, in Fredonia, Kanas to Douglas W. Shaffer and Aquilla Vera (Crawford) Shaffer. When the oil boom hit Freer, Texas, the family moved to South Texas where she attended school and graduated from Freer High School in 1948. After graduation, she and 3 friends loaded onto a bus and went to San Antonio, Texas to attend Business College where they lived at the YWCA.

After Graduation she returned to Freer, Tx where she owned and operated Sparkman Cleaners for many years and later married Tom McCulloch.  Her husband, Tom, worked for Texaco Oil Company which meant the family moved to many different cities, including Zapata, Tx., Seguin, Tx., Hebbronville, Tx. and Jourdanton, Tx.  Each city she lived in, Virginia always worked in offices, some of which included doctors, lawyers and city offices.  After moving to Jourdanton in 1973, she worked for I. Charles Valenta, CPA, for many years.

Later she worked for the City of Jourdanton. In 1984, after the death of her husband, Virginia moved back to Seguin where she work for the Guadalupe County Clerk's office and eventually retired from there at the age of 72.

Virginia's life was marked by her dedication to her family and friends. She was a loving mother to and is survived by her five children, Douglas McCulloch (Linda) of Seguin; Frances Boeing of Seguin; Janice Irick (Drew) of Bedford, Texas; Debbie Moore (Wade) of Bluff Dale, Texas and Anita Meyer (Marvin) of Jourdanton, Texas and a special family friend who was like a son, Donald Jackson (Gay).

Virginia is also survived by her grandchildren, Wayne McCulloch (Brittney), Dawn Carlisle (Jason), John McCulloch (DeAnn), Boots Boenig (Megan), Dusty Boenig, Wade Moore, III (Jillian), Sheree Prather (Andy), Jessica Elam (Steven), Morgan Galan (Chris), Erin Aase-Beck (Ty). She has 22 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson and another great-great- grand child on the way.

Virginia is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Karen Elaine Sparkman, her parents, Loving husband, Tom T. McCulloch, Sister, Bertha Green and son-in-law, Bob Boenig.

The Pallbearers will be Wayne McCulloch, Jason Carlisle, Andy Prather, Steven Elam, Chris Galan, Ty Aase Beck.

We, her children, would like to thank River Bend Nursing Care for their care of Mom since 2020 and for their hospitality during the days prior to her passing.  We would also like to thank Elara Hospice for their great care.

Services are scheduled for Thursday, March 27, 2025, starting with a visitation at Hurley Funeral Home, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, followed by a procession to Jourdanton City Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Tom T. McCulloch.
