Walter Bernard Johnson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cherished great-grandpa, passed away on December 27, 2024, at the age of 78 in Floresville, Texas. He was born on January 20, 1946, in Portland, Oregon to Clarence and Hattie Carol Fisher Johnson. Walter was a man whose spirit was as vibrant as the sports he loved and the family he treasured.

Walter was preceded in death by parents, Clarence and Hattie Johnson; son, Jeffery Alan Johnson; sisters, Rea Mona Bernaski, Joann Glenn Johnson; brothers, Gary Johnson, John Johnson, Calvin Bailey, and grandson, Ryan Nichols.

He is survived by wife Diana Johnson; sons, Clifford Johnson (Karen), Brian A. Johnson; daughters, Melissa R. Johnson, Christy A Nichols (Cory); sister, Candance Lemley "Candi" (Steve); grandchildren, Tanya Arguijo (Dave Henkin), Alyssa Johnson, Melody Johnson, Ariana Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Erik Faz (Brittany Palacios), Colin Johnson, Zachary Johnson, Liam Johnson, Jeremy Nichols (Abijah Alaniz), Lucy Nichols, Jacquelyn Crawford, Daniela Ruano; great-granddaughter, Layla Ruano Nichols and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Walter graduated from high school in 1964, demonstrating a passion for athletics, particularly football. He went on to further his career at Southern Oregon College before answering the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War. Drafted into the Army, Walter completed his basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and was then stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where he joined a medical unit and was deployed to Vietnam in February 1968.

In a beautiful twist of fate, Walter met the love of his life, Diana, and they married on August 26, 1967, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Jourdanton, Texas. The couple moved to Jourdanton in the 80s, where they built a life rich in love and laughter. He was an active man who cherished family time and enjoyed various outdoor activities. His spirit was deeply intertwined with the world of sports, especially his unwavering support for the Oregon Ducks.

A quiet yet creative soul, Walter captured his life experiences in a published book about his time as a logger, reflecting his appreciation for nature and hard work. He had a deep love for dancing and enjoyed sharing that passion with family and friends. His quiet strength and unwavering support for his loved ones will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Hurley Funeral Home, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. A mass will take place on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 11:30 AM at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Jourdanton. Interment to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:15 pm at Shelter 2.
